Frontend Web Developer

Digital media creative and UI/UX designer with experience across a broad range of disciplines including video games, mobile applications and educational software.

Initially a designer and illustrator I moved into digital media as a 2D artist at a video game company where, over several years, I expanded my skillset to include 3D modelling and animation. Eventually taking on a supervisory role that included working on game design and mechanics.

I then moved to a technology incubator where I provided input on interface design, created presentations and produced any digital assets required by the project teams. It was here that I began working on web and mobile applications as well as building and maintaining the company's website.

I continued to develop in these areas at my most recent company where I was originally employed as a graphic web developer designing and building CMS sites for small businesses. I helped create and roll out their quality assurance process and managed it for some time, while providing best practice coaching to graduate developers. My time there ended as propositions lead, helping define the technical aspects of the company's products and assisting in the build and testing of their proprietary platform.

Previous Experience

I am currently working as a freelance developer for several clients including Caliber (promotional web apps), Union Yoga (website), YAUK (membership system and website) and other individual commissions.

Previous clients include Exterity (hotel TV UI), TickAll (touch screen UI) and DEM Solutions (promotional materials and UI).

I can provide web development and UI / UX solutions using HTML5, CSS3, jQuery / JavaScript, on both stand alone sites and platform based, including Joomla and Wordpress.

I have good communications skills at all levels especially written English, can prioritise workloads to maintain high quality standards and have the ability to perform in a target driven environment. I am used to working from briefs unsupervised and also as part of a small team where I have often been in an organisational role.

Designed and built websites for SME clients using Joomla CMS and RSTO’s proprietary platform, Trendzer. Streamlined the build process by developing and maintaining base site templates using XHTML and HTML5 for structure, PHP for content hooks and CSS3 for styling. Since 2013 all templates have followed Responsive Web Design principles with Bootstrap as the underlying framework.

I created and helped implement the company’s quality assurance process for websites, which included pre-flight checklists and tracking of developer performance.

Supervised developer and partner feedback to the Platform Team to ensure Trendzer’s marketplace competitiveness and suitability for partner’s clients. Provided guidance on tool and platform UI / UX to improve usability by none technical staff and end users.

Integral to the company’s migration project, moving several thousand legacy sites from various sources onto the new platform. Provided training in tool use for the migration, created the jQuery / JavaScript used to enable mobile views on migrated sites and was key in resolving CSS conflicts that arose when migrated sites had been built using code that was not compatible with the original platform’s specifications.

Main designer/artist for the Institute, which aimed to commercialise research projects from Scotland’s leading universities. Provided UI / UX design for the project applications and created any digital assets that were required.

Prototyped application UI in HTML and supervised its implementation in the target application.

Built and maintained the Institute’s website and designed and produced their promotional material and videos.

Tell-A-Story (child psychology evaluation tool), Schemata (organising semi-structured data), Centinal (mobile phone security application), MP2 (mobile phone photo sharing application and website), SDS (application and web interface for secure software distribution), Crime Suite (crime prediction web application interface)

Initially a pixel artist producing sprite, panel and background art, as games became predominantly 3D my skillset expanded to include character and environment modeling and animation. Over the course of several projects I began to take on a more supervisory role managing the art pipeline and working on UI / UX, game design and mechanics.

Successfully delivered completed art on many technically demanding projects for several prominent publishing partners.

Baldies (Panasonic Interactive Media, Atari), Skullcaps (Banpresto), Las Vegas Tycoon (Simon & Schuster Interactive), Dark Planet (Ubi Soft), Shinsoki (Imagineer), Mercenary Forces (unreleased)
